So who influenced the Bentley? Well, as is our wont, all of our
house designs begin with a vintage inspiration. Or two or three
or sometimes four.
When building from the ground up, we follow the authentic
instances as closely as possible to more faithfully capture the
spirit of the period and style.
When remodeling, however, things get a bit trickier.
Because we are dealing with an existing footprint and basic
structure, we must summon a little extra creativity to make it
all flow into a harmonious whole.
So we begin with a stack of dusty old planbooks, narrowing down
the possibilities to a few examples that we not only like but
that also can work with our existing structure.
Then, with our inspiration houses in mind, we fashion our own
interpretation of the style, combining the various elements of
the vintage designs in a way that fits the instant case.
Hopefully, the end result is a pleasing variation of the style,
worthy of its authentic inspiration.
But back to our dreary little dear. In this recreation, we
drew upon two distinct but similar English-style Tudor Revival
cottage designs that showcase many of the classic elements we
like so much.
Both are house plans from the 1920s that were sold by the
Loizeaux Lumber Company of Plainfield, New Jersey.
The first is called the Chopin and the second an unnamed
design referred to simply as No. 14140-B (quite the romantic,
that Loizeaux). Beauties both, we think, and with any luck we
have captured something of their essense and charm. You be the
judge!
